ADS-B Traffic Direction

Mike,
In reference to the thread at http://forum.naviatorapp.com/viewtopic.php?id=1179, I have never seen traffic displayed with any directionality on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, Samsung Galaxy 7.0 Plus, or LG Phone, with either my old XGPS170 or with my new XGPS190.  Traffic always appears to be traveling north, as such:

When I click on the traffic, it always shows a track of 000 degrees M, or in the case of my LG Phone, 359 degrees M, as such:

Thank you,
John

Re: ADS-B Traffic Direction

Have a look here
https://github.com/cyoung/stratux/issues/277

This seems to be a UAT ground station relay issue

We are working on it in the Stratux system

Re: ADS-B Traffic Direction

Thanks Peeps.

Doesn't seem to be the same problem.  First, these are 1090's and not going through a UAT.  Also, I went flying this morning with both an Android (Naviator) and an iPad (WingX), both tapping into my XGPS190 at the same time.  Naviator showed all targets traveling north, and WingX showed their proper travel direction.  I tried AVARE a few days ago and it also shows the direction of flight correctly so it looks to be a Naviator issue.

Re: ADS-B Traffic Direction

how do you know the targets are 1090 and not a UAT ground antenna rebroadcast? How are you able to differentiate?

Re: ADS-B Traffic Direction

Tail numbers of AA or FDX, or UA, etc., and they are in the high flight levels.  Also, I can pick them up in my living room.  I can only pick up FIS or TIS-B above 2000' in this area.

Re: ADS-B Traffic Direction

Sorry Mike, there is no discernible difference.  In the screen shots below, don't sweat the altitude difference (Avare = 17k and Naviator = 25k).  The screen shots were taken a good five minutes apart.

Re: ADS-B Traffic Direction

A few things to note: All airliners squawk using 1090ES.  Very few airliners are equipped with a complete ADS-B out solution.  You have no ADS-B uplink, so your "in" box must be seeing the direct 1090ES signal.  That signal might not have the direction information in it, or that information may not be coded for direct ADS-B.  A possible  explanation?
Even though I also squawk 1090ES,  receive my ADS-B via 978 uplink, and all my traffic always has a proper direction vector, unless it's sitting still on the ground.
FWIW,

Re: ADS-B Traffic Direction

What version of Stratux are you using ?

The only time I have seen this was with the 2nd or 3rd version of Stratux.
Since then the direction has always been accurate.

I am currently running v0.7b3 Stratux and 3.7.2 Naviator with no issues.

Re: ADS-B Traffic Direction

I believe I know what the problem is. It's the same issue that used to affect Stratux, as Paul mentioned. It happens because a flag in the GDL90 protocol is not being properly set by the ADS-B receiver which causes Naviator to ignore the heading data. I'll make some changes to the Naviator code and release an update which should finally resolve this.

Cheers,
Mike

Re: ADS-B Traffic Direction

That's great Mike, thank you.  If you want to, feel free to send me the apk (or a link to it) and I'll give it a quick check before you post it.

Re: ADS-B Traffic Direction

Mike, if it will help...  Saturday afternoon I launched Naviator and for the first time ever, it showed the target's direction-of-flight.  I watched for a while and took the screenshot below.  100% of the traffic I saw had directionality.  This was well after 3.7.3 and I had run 3.7.3 many times over the previous few days and this is the first time I saw any directionality.  I shut Naviator down and didn't relaunch it again for a couple of hours, and unfortunately, it hasn't happened again since.  Just thought you might want to know, in case 3.7.3 fixed some instances.
